SmartPhones & Cell – Phone Scams and Trickery

My editor, Don, recently told me that he wasn’t familiar with SMISHING…..This article is dedicated to you Don

News on Cell Phone Scams!!!

Your cellphone alerts you with your favorite tone— a text message has come in. It has your bank’s name and has some disturbing news.  Something odd  is going on with your account…”please contact us at the following number to clear this up”… a sense of urgency in the text message….. You’ve just been “smished” When you call the number the text gives you for your bank, you’re actually connecting to the scammers, who ask for your account number, PIN, Social Security number — the raw material of identity theft.

A new year means a new scam, this time, targeting cell phone users. Like traditional “phishing,” “smishing” attempts to get cell phone users to click on a link included in a text message. Schemers often pose as banks or lottery sweepstakes asking customers to contact them immediately about a pressing issue that needs to be discussed. BBB warns about the latest smishing scams and provides the following advice to avoid becoming a victim.

Bogus bank alerts lead in smishing attacks. But you may also get texts promising a free laptop, mortgage assistance or lottery winnings. A message may just say, “Short on cash? Reply here!” One new come-on is a supposed free security app to get you to click on a link that in fact downloads identity-stealing software to your phone.

In computing, Smishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques similar to phishing.  Similarly smishing targets cellular phones.Victim receive an SMS message;  the name is derived from “SMs phISHING” SMS (Short Message Service) is the technology used for text messages on cell phones, with a hyperlink wherein a malware automatically finds its way to the cellular phone, or leads the victim to a phishing site formatted for cellular phones.

Example of a smishing message:

In many cases, the smishing message will show that it came from a random 3 or 4-digit number,  instead of displaying an actual phone number. This usually indicates the SMS message was sent via email to the cell phone, and not sent from another cell phone.

To learn more, read the definitions below:

Botnet:

A botnet is a collection of software agents, or robots, that run autonomously and automatically. A Botnet uses any number of internet connected computers that inconspicuously forward e-mails (which include spam, malware, or viruses) to other computers on the internet. These infected computers, also known as “zombies” deliver DoS attacks (Denial of Service) and often rely on thousands of zombie PCs.

Pod Slurping:

It is the act of using a portable data storage device such as an iPod digital audio player to illicitly download large amounts of confidential data by directly plugging it into a computer where the data is held. As these storage devices become smaller and their storage capacity becomes greater, they are becoming an increasing security risk to companies and government agencies. Access is gained while the computer is unattended.

BlueBugging:

It allows a skilled person to illegally access a cellular phone via Bluetooth wireless technology. More often than not, going unnoticed to the phone’s owner. A vulnerability such as this allows phone calls, and SMS messages to be read and sent, phonebook contacts to be erased, phone conversations to be tapped, and other malicious activities. Fortunately, widespread impact is minimized because of the range of bluethooth technology. Access is only attainable within a 10 meter range of the phone.

Ransomware & Scareware

It makes a computer unusable, then demands payment in order for the user to regain full access. Ransomware is also commonly referred to as a “cryptovirus” or “cryptotrojan.” First it will disable an essential system service or lock the display at system startup and encrypt some of the user’s personal files. Then prompts the user to enter a code obtainable only after wiring payment to the attacker or urging the user to buy a decryption or removal tool. Ransomware was originally with a trojan called PC Cyborg.

It is a software that tricks computer users into downloading or purchasing it, under the guise of fixing their computer. Scareware programs often run a fictitious virus and malware scan, and then present the user with a list of malicious programs or problems that must be corrected. The scareware informs the computer user that in order to fix these “problems” it will require the user to pay a fee for a “full” or “registered” version of the software. Examples of scareware include: System Security, Anti-Virus 2010, and Registry Cleaner XP.

Sidejacking:

Sidejacking is a hacking technique used to gain access to your website specific accounts. Websites typically encrypt your password so it cannot be stolen, but then send you an unencrypted “session-id”. The session-id is either some random data in the URL, or more often, random data in a HTTP cookie. A hacker who finds the session-id can then use it to gain access to the respective account. Thus enabling the hacker ability to read your email, look at what you’ve bought online, or control your social network account, and so on.

This information is then used to create duplicate credit/debit/ATM cards that was used halfway around the world, within 30 minutes.  Whatever the method, the goal is the same: to get your personal information and money.

The Federal Trade Commission recently moved against a firm that was allegedly offering phony government loans by text. Five and a half million text messages were sent to cellphones in just 40 days — roughly 85 per minute, according to the commission. This firm also is alleged to have sold the numbers of people who replied asking to be removed from the list.

So here’s your defense:

  • Don’t reply. Even sending a “remove” or “stop” response to a smishing text tells scammers that your number is active. Schemers are preying on victims that text back and ultimately verify that the text has been sent to an active cell phone number. If the message has a link in it, never click it. Many schemers use this as way to spread a viral attack on your phone.
  • Block suspicious numbers. Your cellphone provider may be able to block numbers where the texts and calls originate. If you believe you have fallen victim to a “smishing” bank scam, call your bank. They’ll be able to tell you if the text is legitimate.
  • Your bank is texting you? Look up its number yourself — don’t trust the one provided in the text — and call.
  • Don’t store credit card and account login information in emails or notes on the phone.
  • Set your phone to time out and lock after a short period. If it’s stolen, thieves won’t get personal information.
  • Install updates. When you receive a bona fide notification of an upgrade to your phone’s software, install it immediately. If you doubt the message is legitimate, call your cell or app provider
  • Do your research – If you believe you have fallen victim to a “smishing”, lottery sweepstakes scam, contact your BBB directly and if it is a scam, file an official complaint against the business that sent the text.
  • CONTACT THE FEDERAL TRADE COMISSION – The FTC works to legally prevent fraudulent business practices in the marketplace. You may file a complaint with the FTC by calling 1.877.382.HELP (4357).

THE MATRIX, PHOTOSHOP, AGE OF TECHNOLOGY…WHAT’S WHAT?

matrix_neo_in_morpheus_glasses

THE MATRIX

…A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.

I take you back to the scene which, in my opinion, is most controversial:  Taking the red pill opens the soon-to-be Neo’s eyes to the fantasy that he had been living in.  Morpheus says to Neo “You have to understand that many people are not ready to be unplugged, and many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it.”  (Contrast with taking the blue pill.  If Neo would have taken the blue pill, he would have stayed within the Matrix and been blind to reality.)

1999: The Phantom Menace Vs. The Matrix - The Film League

By contrast, The Matrix was a critical and financial darling, and as of this writing, still ranks with an 8.7 out of 10 rating on IMDB. While The Matrix didn’t have The Phantom Menace’s built in audience, it did seem to have fulfilled…

Many of my followers will not get this analogy right away as The Matrix movies are geared towards the younger generation and that of the Age of Technology.  However, the fact remains that there MAY BE some truth to this “take the red pill”!  I wanted answers and answers I got!

Shout out to my instructor “RL”!…he, always encourages his students to remember that we took the “Red Pill” when we advanced to his course.  Photoshop is AMAZING to say the least.  I work with CS5 Extended version and I have to say, some of the things I can do with photographs from digital cameras, commercial cd of digital images, captured video images and artwork created in drawing programs has amazed me. What is Photoshop?…basically, its a graphics editing software: click here  for more information.   I can take images of two totally different people and merge or infuse them into a whole new person.  How’s that for a God-like complex?  Seriously though, I have found that my clients are asking me to restore old photos of ancestors that have been well preserved for just such an opportunity!  I am happy to provide the service.

As far as THE MATRIX….well, I have my take on that also….

There has always been some kind of “conspiracy theory”…in EVERY generation.  I believe what I see.  However, when working with Photoshop the way I have, I’m almost certain that what you see MAY NOT always be what is actually REAL.  I have stopped believing what I see in magazines, movies and  images I see of celebrities….there are just WAY TOO MANY things that could have been done to “enhance” the appearance.

My goal is simple and my motives are pure. I want to help the person who needs information on how to sort through this entire MATRIX-like world and live comfortably while keeping up-to-date with what’s going on in the world.

More importantly, is the fact that today’s age of technology has thrust EVERYONE… into a position of great advancement.  Some are willing to make the change while others are quite reluctant. I even find myself drawn to old ways when it comes to acclimating myself in new technologies, such as YouTube, social networking, internet businesses, SEO [search engine optimization]…. (still working on that), and a multitude of other avenues……millions and millions of people have taken their ideas and turned them into lucrative businesses, by way of this new and rapidly advance age.  I’m excited about it.  I still have much to learn, but the possibilities are endless when you stop to think about it.  Like California and its coined phrase (you can sue ANYBODY for ANYTHING), the internet has endless potential…well at least until the government takes over…. (more will be revealed)…..

I welcome comments on this article :)

Seniors Aren’t Just Sitting Around…Anymore

senior_couple

A reliable source confirms that 6 Million More Senior Citizens are using the Web than just 10 Years Ago

I was just thinking about my mother’s best friend the other day.  She mentioned that she had to check her Facebook page and download some music to upload to her IPOD!…

This inspired me to write another article about seniors and the internet.  I can list at least 20 seniors I know who are more active on the internet than what would have been believed just 10 years ago.  I often encounter seniors that are adamant about staying away from computers and the internet but actually, those numbers are dwindling quickly.  They are surfing, blogging, active in forums and starting online business!

People over 65 only make up approximately less than 10%of the active Internet world, however, these numbers are on the rise. In the last ten years, the number of senior citizens actively using the Internet has increased by more than 55%, from 11.3 million active users in November 2004 to 17.5 million in November 2009. Among people 65 and over, the growth of women in the last five years has outpaced the growth of men by 6 percentage points….GO GIRL POWER!

Not only are more people 65 and older heading online, but they are also spending more time on the Internet. Time spent on the web by seniors increased 11%in the last five years, from approximately 52 hours per month in November 2004 to just over 58 hours in 2009.

Of the total population, 13% is represented by the 65 and over crowd and with this increase in online usage.  Based on what they’re doing online, its understandable that they are engaged in a lot of the same activities that dominate individuals of other ages, such as –  e-mail, sharing photos, social networking, checking out the latest news and weather – and it’s worth noting that a good percentage of them are spending time with age-appropriate pursuits such as leisure travel, personal health care and financial concerns.

What are they doing on the Web?
Online visitors 65+ partake in many activities, from e-mail to bill paying. With 88.6 % of seniors, checking personal e-mail was the No. 1 online activity performed in the last 30 days. Viewing or printing online maps and checking the weather online were the second (68.6%) and third (60.1%) most popular online activities, with 68.6 and 60.1 percent, respectively.

The No. 1 online spot for people over 65 in November 2009 was Google Search…10.3 million unique visitors!  Yahoo and Facebook were No. 2 and No. 3, with 8.2 million and 7.9 million visitors, respectively. Interestingly, Facebook, which came in at No. 3, ranked No. 45 just a year ago among sites visited by senior citizens

Overall, the number of unique visitors who are 65 or older on social networking and blog sites has increased 53 percent in the last two years alone. 8.2% of all social network and blog visitors are over 65, just 0.1 percentage points less than the number of teenagers who frequent these sites….INTERESTING, I THOUGHT.    I found a few references…

“Word cannot register your account” [FIX]

Tekknowgerl sitting down

I recently completed a course that showed me how to create a blog directly from Microsoft Word 2007.  The instructor was absolutely awesome and taught me things I had no idea was available in Word AND in addition to that, he was a cool dude J!!! So a quick shout out to JDC….much love.  Back to how a you can register your blog account in Word 2007 and begin blogging in less than 15 minutes!…(assuming you already have a blog account to register).

I was configuring a WordPress blog for one of my clients so that remote access would allow her to post from within Microsoft Office Word 2007.  I went through all the steps correctly, but Word pondered a moment and then…“Word cannot register your account”.  I was livid, knowing that this is not something that should be a problem for me.  I want my clients to come to me for instruction, direction and help if they need it, and blogging is such a common thing these days, I knew that Tekknowgerl had to get the 411 on this issue and FAST!…for my clients of course.

I decided to try troubleshooting several “fixes”, and research efforts online to find a more descriptive solution to the problem. Several tekkies and geeks online offered a variety of solutions that, unfortunately did not work.  People often said, “access the Admin Panel in WordPress and select the option: Enable the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols.”, which would, apparently allow Word 2007 to access and register your WordPress blog account. This is one thing you must do.  However, this did not work for me or my client…without additional steps being taken! Another said to access the php file and edit in your favorite text editor…yeah right.  Fact is, in addition to enabling the Remote Publishing options; you simply need to provide Word 2007 with the following URL address: http://yoursitename.com/xmlrpc.php Basically, the steps would be as follows:

Settings>Writing>Remote Publishing> (ENABLE)—–>XML-RPCEnable the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols.

Save Changes

Once that’s done, go to main menu at the Office Button> New> New Blog Post

Word will prompt you to register your Blog Account

Choose your blog provider, i.e., Blogger, WordPress, Windows Live Spaces, etc.

Type your credentials as listed above – http://yoursitename.com/xmlrpc.php (careful to leave “/xmlrpc.php”)

The Picture Options dialog is kind of complicated if you’re not familiar. You don’t have to complete this step to publish your blog, but if you want to give it a try, take note and be mindful! You can choose to have Word publish images to directly to you blog provider (for example a wordpress.com account) or to your server (if you or a host is serving your site). I host Tekknowgerl, so I chose the “My own server” option. In the Upload URL text box, type in the address as so: ftp://username:password@URL.com/folder. So, let’s say that this is your information:

  • WordPress Username: tekknowgerl
  • WordPress Password: TKGomglol2011
  • WordPress URL: tekknowgerl.com
  • Folder: images

Then you would type: ftp://tekknowgerl: TKGomglol2011@tekknowgerl.com/images – observe the colon between the username and password and that there is no “http://” in the URL.

And the source would read: http:// tekknowgerl.com/images

If you upload your images to the default location (from within posts), you can set that up as: ftp://user:pass@URL.com/full/path/to/wp-content/uploads, and the Source URL would be http://URL.com/wp-content/uploads.

WordPress Update Nightmare

WordpressFix

Over the last two weeks I have endured just about every frustrating issues imaginable in WordPress.  One of my clients decided to change themes in his wordpress blog.  I said to him, “Sure, no problem, I know the exact theme that would be great for what it is you are trying to accomplish”!  Upon FTP’ing the theme, I noticed that he didn’t have the most current version of WordPress, so I decided to update his version of WordPress just to finish up my project (the icing on the cake :) ) – much to my surprise, I began getting all sorts of “Parse Errors”, Fatal Errors, and of course the dreaded memory allocation error!  I had not made the backup of his blog…ARGH!!!!  Wordpress was not allowing access to the Admin Panel!  I had to inform the client of the situation and needless to say, he was quite displeased.

WordPress provides us with FREE blog sites, and updates, but the price we pay if you are self-hosted, is unfortunate, to say the least.  I have decided to provide a Tekknowgerl solution in hopes that you won’t have to endure the disastrous position I was in.  Research on the internet gave way to multiple possible “fixes”, but to no avail.  Two of the most common are listed here just as a reference in case you want to troubleshoot by the process of elimination.  Whether you be a novice or a technology wizard, I hope this helps you solve your plight!

Finally…

Updating WordPress manually through my FTP client did the job! It’s not complicated, only remember not to over-write your wp-content or wp-config files. Upload them a few at a time being mindful of the two most important files and PRESTO, you have access to your blog as well as your admin page to fix up your mistakes and are able to BACKUP your blog.

Happy Blogging!  I can give you more information if you need specific details, feel free to write me if you need additional tips or suggestions.

Wet Cellphone Fix

cell phone rescue rice wet

Many of us have found ourselves in a situation where we have either accidentally dropped our cell phone, cordless phone, Bluetooth or other electronic device in water! Some cases have even resulted in a complete submersion in water, i.e., a swimming pool, dishwater, bathtub or (heaven forbid) the toilet……

Well Tekknowgerl has had similar issues and I have found a trick that you can try right at home.  You only need to have some uncooked rice on hand and about 24 hours to allow the trick to work.
IMMEDIATELY TURN THE DEVICE OFF! DO NOT MANIPULATE THE DEVICE by recharging or switching off and on. Do not try to operate in any way. You don’t want to short circuit your device. Simply remove all parts, i.e., batteries, sim card, etc., and place the device and parts that has the water damage in a bowl or zip-lock bag large enough to cover with the uncooked rice. (I prefer a bag, but whatever works for you). Make sure however, if you use a bag, which you suck out all the air possible, once you have covered the device with the rice, (this avoids moisture in the bag). That’s it! Wait 24 hours (approximately) and VOILA! Your device is dry and ready to be used again. Of course, if you notice drops of water, the device should be covered in rice for more time. This tip came in handy from one of my readers and is verified by Tekknowgerl. However, don’t just take my word for it, the internet has solutions and Tekknowgerl believes in sharing the knowledge.

Cell Phone Tracking

telephone tracing columbo

Technology has changed, remember when it only took 3 minutes for Columbo and his counterparts to trace a call for that “kidnapped” victim?,  and in movies they were always just a few seconds short of identifying where the call originated?, well today if you’re on the phone for 3 minutes they can tap you on the shoulder because today it takes under 10 seconds to trace a call..(sorry to ruin the criminal drama…)

Every cell phone is tracked by carriers and every smartphone does it also. How else could Apple 2 years ago tell you where your iPhone was when you lost it and show you a map online.. (using their mobileme service) I think too many people took that “It’s Magical!” marketing term a bit too literally.

Android does it also but they don’t store the whole thing on the phone they upload it to their servers when you go to their stores.

Is it really safe on their servers?
Maybe we should ask Sony (PlayStation Network Security Group) they got hacked and lost almost everything (usernames, passwords, security question answers and credit card information, except the credit card pin) putting hundreds of thousands of users at risk. (Many parents put their information in for their kids…)
The credit card pin was safe because Sony didn’t store it.

But you even have to watch the “FREE” applications you use on your phones for example:

Pandora is one of the most friendly social applications on all smart phones:
- They transmit your username, password, sex, age and more to advertisers..(be sure to thank them for that)
With all that said Apple did screw up when they said the iphone did not track your location when you turned the services off,
because it still did the tracking, a bug? maybe.. (at least that’s what Apple claims, and it will be fixed shortly they say.)

But if you can sue Apple for software bugs, Microsoft better watch out..(Rumor: Bill Gates is probably writing a big check to the Apple legal defense fund as you read this.. )

Teach Senior Citizens to Use a Computer

Teaching-Seniors-to-use-a-computer-450x230

Many times a year, my aunt calls me from Texas to ask me how to do various things on her computer. We spend hours on the phone surfing the net, sending emails, organizing files/photos, etc…  Also, I find that a few of my “senior” customers are quite apprehensive about learning new technology…so, while searching this morning, I found an interesting article that may be of some help to someone out there: http://www.ehow.com/how_2100473_teach-senior-citizens-use-computer.html .

I think this article is an excellent resource for almost anyone who needs or wants to learn about computers. Make sure you exercise patience and tolerance when assisting your pupil. Make the lessons fun and simple. As time goes on, you and your student will enjoy surfing the net, chatting, “Tweeting” and blogging…who knows, maybe your senior will create a blog specifically for SENIORS.

Protecting Your Personal Computer

gorilla guard

Whether you use your personal computer for work or personal reasons, security and protection against malicious Trojans and viruses is incredibly important in ensuring that your computer not only performs as its best, but that your personal information is safe from prying eyes and hackers.

Identity theft affects thousands of people each year, and even if you don’t feel that you have any identifying information or sensitive data on your computer you’re probably wrong. If you’ve ever entered your credit card information into a website order form or logged into your personal banking from your computer, you’re at risk.
The information stored on your computer can sometimes be accessed by anyone who wants to and might take just a little time – this really amounts to no work at all for someone who knows what they’re doing.
Hackers find little “doors” that you leave “open” and get inside your computer to find your personal and private information, then send it somewhere so they can pick it up safely. You just have to know how to plug the leaks in your computer and you should be fine.

Your Operating System

No matter which system you use, there are probably updates for it already unless you’ve managed to check in the past week. That’s because there’s usually a download available every week that will provide updates for various drivers and other critical components in your Operating System.
If you have just bought your computer from a store, then you can pretty much bet it’s already at risk. Think about it – your computer was sitting in a box in a store and probably has been for the past few weeks, if not months.
So the first thing you should do when hooking up your new computer and getting on the internet is to verify that the software is up to date.

In Today’s Society, Protecting Your Computer Is A Necessity

Don’t store sensitive data on your desktop in the first place. Should your laptop or computer get infected that has a virus, worm, or piece of spyware, you can stamp out the individuals dependable by not storing your

Email SPAM…So Frustrating!

In the Internet age, not only are you fighting junk mail in your mailbox, but you’ve also got exorbitant amounts of spam in your virtual inbox.  In addition to being quite annoying, these e-mails can introduce viruses and spyware into your computer.  While there are several different ways to combat spam, here’s a start.

Remember the key to clearing up your inbox is patience, Patience, patience! We’ve all been there.  I know how frustrating it is to search through 150 messages in your inbox, just to find the one e-mail that you’ve been looking for.  Junk-mail filters are better than ever, but conversely, so is Junk Mail.

Be patient!  The following steps will help you clear up your crowded inbox once and for all.  Don’t be discouraged, it won’t happen overnight, but with a little bit of time up-front, keeping your mailbox junk free will become fast and easy.

  • Log into your e-maill
  • Isolate the Junk Mail.  If you have a mail server that stores mail in your “trash can” until you log off, use it.  If not, make a folder that you can temporarily store your junk mail in until you can throw it away.  Move all of your junk mail to this folder, and this is where we’ll keep it until we’re done with it.
  • Survey your junk-mail.  After you’ve isolated your junk mail, take a good look at the folder where you’ve put it all (where all of the e-mails are listed, one by one).  You’ll probably notice trends in the “sender” field and the “subject” line.  Sometimes, many junk-mail items will come from the same sponsor or company.  E-mail that tends to repeat the same subject line, letter for letter, are a good example of this type of e-mail.  It’s important to note these trends for the next step.
  • Pick 5-10 e-mails.  You’re selecting these e-mails as “target” e-mails for today’s round of “unsubscribing.”  You can select more if you have more time, or just two or three if you don’t get much junk mail.  Either way, your goal is to begin solving the junk-mail problem, instead of ignoring it and hoping it goes away.
  • Delete the rest.  Well, you can keep them if you want – but really, what are you going to use them for?  It’s easier to start with a clean folder each time you do your “unsubscribing” rounds.
  • Unsubscribe.  This step is important.  People who send solicitation e-mails are required to abide by the same rules as most telemarketers.  This means that if you don’t want them, you should tell them. They are therefore required to stop sending you unwanted mail.  Open one of your junk-mail items. Usually unsubscribe disclaimers are located on the very bottom of the e-mail, where most people never look.  It is very rare that you’ll get an e-mail without the option to unsubscribe tacked on the bottom.

Unsubscribing.  There are three ways that most companies will ask you to unsubscribe:

  1. The Auto-Unsubscribe – Click on the link, and a window pops up saying you’ve been unsubscribed, and please allow a pre-designated number of hours to be removed (usually 24-48). This is my favorite type of unsubscribe option, because it requires no input on my part. :-)
  2. The E-Mail Removal Form – Click on the provided unsubscribe link in the junk e-mail, and a small page will pop up asking for your e-mail address. Just type your e-mail into the field and click “submit” or “unsubscribe me” or whatever the button says. These forms will never ask for your name or any other personal information. If they do, do not input any information, close the window and move on the the next junk e-mail.
  3. The “Reply” Removal – Some e-mails do not have a link to unsubscribe, and instead ask you to unsubscribe by replying to the e-mail with a word like “unsubscribe” or a phrase like “no thanks” in the subject line. Simply follow the instructions. I’ve heard people say that replying to these requests validates that your address is valid (opening the gate for more spam), however, I have never received a follow-up e-mail or any other correspondence from any company who I have unsubscribed from this way.
  • Wait.  Most requests to remove you from a mailing list take 24-48 hours to process.  Some are immediate, whereas some may take longer. I would suggest waiting for 3-5 days, and during that time simply delete all incoming junk mail as you normally would.  This prevents you from accidentally unsubscribing from the same company twice.  After you use the “unsubscribe” tool provided on the e-mail, there is no reason to keep it and you can delete it like normal.
  • After 2 rounds of “unsubscribing” you should notice a dramatic reduction in the amount of junk e-mail you receive.  Unsubscribing from just one junk mail distributor may cut down on your junk mail load by as many as four junk-mails per day!  That’s almost 30 erroneous bits of junk per week! Once you’ve reached the point where your mail is manageable again, you can unsubscribe to junk mail as you receive it.

If you continue to receive junk mail even after you have attempted to unsubscribe from the service, you can take additional steps like reporting the mail as “spam” to your e-mail service provider, or adding the sender or domain of the sender to your “blocked” list.

  • With a little bit of time and patience on your part, it is possible to reclaim your inbox. I was at a point where I would receive over 100 junk e-mails per day – by the time I’d finished deleting them all I wouldn’t even want to read the ones from my friends. I made up my mind to stop ignoring the problem and start fixing it, and less than a month and a half later I was down to less than 10 per week. Now, I simply keep up by unsubscribing as they arrive, and I have my inbox to myself again. You can, too!

Many junk emails come with two unsubscribe links one for the particular ad and one for the big company-which probably will unsubscribe you from many ads

    Tips

Most find that many different junk e-mails can come from the same source. Once you start “unsubscribing” from these e-mails, you’ll begin to notice that some of the unsubscribe pages look the same. For that reason, I recommend that you tackle your junk mail on a weekly basis. Tackle e-mails 5 or 6 at a time, give it a week, and repeat the process.

If you cancel a subscription, and mail keeps coming, it may be necessary to add the junk mail’s sender or domain to your blocked list. This may not always work, however. See the warnings below. A lot of spam senders will randomize the “From” section, so you can’t block just one. (For example, you may get an email -which is really spam- from Sk8tr92 and then the same email from the same spam people that says it is from Sk8tr49)

Survey Sites tend to generate a lot of junk mail. While many people use surveys as a great part-time source of extra income, signing up for surveys, free gifts, free drawings, etc. often distributes your e-mail to tens of unwanted mailing lists.

Try to keep your junk mail to a minimum by not giving your e-mail address to anybody that you don’t know, trust, or use for business purposes like your bank, business websites, etc.

When unsubscribing, the “E-mail Removal Form” is a very popular method for most sponsors. I would recommend that you copy your e-mail address to the clipboard of your PC (by highlighting your typed e-mail address, right clicking, and selecting ‘copy’), and when you encounter one of these forms, right-click in the space that asks for your e-mail, and click ‘paste’. This keeps you from typing your address over and over again.

There are tools that help you unsubscribe from unwanted emails. Such as www.unsubscribe.com. They will add a button to your email client that will seek out the best method of taking you off the unwanted email.

THIS MAY NOT WORK!!!! It could in fact increase the amount of spam that you get.  Some spamers use unsubscribe links to make sure that the email is “live.” Use caution when using this method. It is recommended to NEVER respond to or open spam.

With viruses running rampant today you never can be too careful about your e-mail protection. Generally speaking, your PC will not contract a virus from simply viewing an email. Do notopen any attachments inside your junk mail. If it can be avoided, do not click on any of the graphics or links contained within the e-mail either. These links can direct you to pop-ups or other junk advertisements.

Be extra careful when you decide to add senders or domains to your “blocked” list.  Some junk mail can come from “friendly” domains like gmail.com, or hotmail.com. It’s more than likely that at least one of your friends uses one of these common e-mail servers, so if you block the entire domain they wont be able to contact you, either!

Before unsubscribing to an e-mail, make sure to read the disclaimer thoroughly. Sometimes other links, in addition to the “unsubscribe” link, are contained in the disclaimer, and the last thing you want to do is click on the wrong one!
