Think for a second: How many different passwords have you used today? A new study has concluded what you have been thinking. Changing those passwords, keeping dozens of them in your head for shopping, banking, or logging on at work — all of it is a waste of time. The Boston Globe reports that a principal researcher for Microsoft Research finds that redoing those passwords regularly just doesn’t help much. It’s not that he thinks we should just give up on protecting our computers with passwords. He says the problem is that users are being asked to take too many steps, and more are constantly being added as new threats emerge or evolve. Security professionals have generally assumed that you can’t have too much knowledge in the battle against cyber crime. But a crucial part of the equation is, how much is your time worth?

In fact, the constant changing is counterproductive, says a new study from Microsoft Research. Worse still, changing passwords isn’t all that effective to begin with, because the practice assumes that the snooper who’s just lifted your password is going to wait until you’ve changed to a new one to use it. Writes Globe editor Mark Pothier, “that’s about as likely as a crook lifting a house key and then waiting until the lock is changed before sticking it in the door.”

Add in the fact that security professionals are always adding additional layers and instructions and complexities to their list of demands, and it’s no wonder that users’ eyes often glaze over during security training.

Security experts sugest circumventing the “time wasted” issue with studies and anecdotal data, as doctors do when they show a direct connection between heart disease and smoking. “If you do this, Mr. User, this will happen” studies are, ironically, something the security industry does not do well. Instead, they blanket users with pages and pages of instruction. Eventually, this eats into their productivity. Given a choice between implementing a bunch of new security features that really don’t affect them because they don’t use stupid passwords and don’t click on Nigerian phishing scams, or finishing that TPS report on time, they’re going to choose the TPS report.

So, we need more info; less gloom and doom talk; and security pros need to understand that all this education costs users time, while benefiting only that small sliver who actually need to be told 123456 is a bad password.

This short article give some really good information: http://voices.yahoo.com/password-changes-waste-time-5834746.html

I’ve got a page on Facebook, Tekknowgerl. I can’t say that the page is very successful but I have had some suggestions from people with similar businesses. My recent offer to EVERYONE is if you like my Facebook page, I offer a free gift! However, Last week I found something on Facebook.

It’s just plain cool:

Pages gone wild, spring break 2011 is a great way to see lots of Facebook Pages, check out what they are doing, maybe make some new business connections or even some friends.

The concept is simple:

list your page
go to other listed pages and like them
let others know you did it

This has led to lots of liking, lots of reciprocating and a nice spike in my Facebook views. More importantly, I’ve got more pages filling my page’s news feed, more excellent content to share and discuss. More possibilities for conversation, which, as you may know, is exactly my definition of social media.

When is a Facebook Like not a Like?

As with all things, not everyone has the same take on the process. There are a few people who only appreciate the Like if it comes from a person, not from a page. That’s odd to me, because only a “person’ can actually like their page…..duh! Maybe they are just number collectors.

For me, the numbers are a side issue. They may be an indicator of how much reach you really have, but they are not my goal, and not a sure sign that my efforts are successful.

If the best conversation-starter you have for me is “please like my page as a person not a page” I think it’s unlikely that we’re about to start an ongoing relationship.

Maybe I’m being a cynic but it’s entirely possible they aren’t just after the increase in numbers. They may not actually know that you can see the pages that have liked your page. Whatever the case, here’s how you can see which Pages have Liked your Facebook Page:

Click on the icon to view Likes
Click See All
Click the People drop down and choose Pages

Why bother?

As a page you do not have the option to comment on a personal profile or to tag a person who is not also a personal friend. My like of your page from my personal profile does not really give us any greater an opportunity to connect, it simply adds a number to your Like tally and puts your status updates into my feed

In my view, Liking as a Page is much more powerful

It was more powerful until Facebook made more changes! As a page you can comment on a page or tag another page. For instance, I can create status updates that thank the pages that have liked my page, tagging their pages, creating some very nice cross-promotion.

Tag a page in your own status update and the page owner sees it on their profile wall, but can’t reply without either going to your page, or clicking view post. While some may prefer likes, I feel that the more views, and especially the more comments to your page, the better.

Or you can comment on pages. This both adds to the conversation with the other page and gives your page exposure to the fans of that page. Join a discussion as your page and you’ll be seen by all of the people and pages who like that page. They might just pop onto your page to check you out andmaybe even have a conversation.

Not sure what I mean by “tag”? Read this: How to tag a person or page in your Facebook status

And then there’s the news feed

If you Like the page from your profile, their status updates appear in your news feed between photos of your cousin’s wedding and questions about which soft drink you like better. For some this becomes just that much more noise.

Like the page from your page, and when you’re logged in as your page and you click on your Home menu, the status updates from the pages you have liked populate your page’s news feed. If you’re following a lot of pages that are in your industry, this is an excellent way to aggregate news in your field to read, interact with, and share a few times a day.

These are some pretty strong benefits to using Facebook as your page, and to Liking other pages as your page. I’m sure there are more and would love to hear in the comments if you’ve found any others.

As with everything else in social media there isn’t one right way or one wrong way to do this. We just need to understand the tools and decide what our goals are.

For me, I’d rather have a real conversation page to page, than simply be another number in the likes for a page.

My biggest hope in “liking” Facebook pages is that you all share what Tekknowgerl. com has to offer and learn something from me. My ultimate goal is to be of service and I get that satisfaction from offering tips, suggestions and semi-tutoring.

Hope this Helps!!

News on Cell Phone Scams!!!

Your cellphone alerts you with your favorite tone— a text message has come in. It has your bank’s name and has some disturbing news. Something odd is going on with your account…”please contact us at the following number to clear this up”… a sense of urgency in the text message….. You’ve just been “smished” When you call the number the text gives you for your bank, you’re actually connecting to the scammers, who ask for your account number, PIN, Social Security number — the raw material of identity theft.

A new year means a new scam, this time, targeting cell phone users. Like traditional “phishing,” “smishing” attempts to get cell phone users to click on a link included in a text message. Schemers often pose as banks or lottery sweepstakes asking customers to contact them immediately about a pressing issue that needs to be discussed. BBB warns about the latest smishing scams and provides the following advice to avoid becoming a victim.

Bogus bank alerts lead in smishing attacks. But you may also get texts promising a free laptop, mortgage assistance or lottery winnings. A message may just say, “Short on cash? Reply here!” One new come-on is a supposed free security app to get you to click on a link that in fact downloads identity-stealing software to your phone.

In computing, Smishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques similar to phishing. Similarly smishing targets cellular phones.Victim receive an SMS message; the name is derived from “SMs phISHING” SMS (Short Message Service) is the technology used for text messages on cell phones, with a hyperlink wherein a malware automatically finds its way to the cellular phone, or leads the victim to a phishing site formatted for cellular phones.

Example of a smishing message:

In many cases, the smishing message will show that it came from a random 3 or 4-digit number, instead of displaying an actual phone number. This usually indicates the SMS message was sent via email to the cell phone, and not sent from another cell phone.

To learn more, read the definitions below:

Botnet:

A botnet is a collection of software agents, or robots, that run autonomously and automatically. A Botnet uses any number of internet connected computers that inconspicuously forward e-mails (which include spam, malware, or viruses) to other computers on the internet. These infected computers, also known as “zombies” deliver DoS attacks (Denial of Service) and often rely on thousands of zombie PCs.

Pod Slurping:

It is the act of using a portable data storage device such as an iPod digital audio player to illicitly download large amounts of confidential data by directly plugging it into a computer where the data is held. As these storage devices become smaller and their storage capacity becomes greater, they are becoming an increasing security risk to companies and government agencies. Access is gained while the computer is unattended.

BlueBugging:

It allows a skilled person to illegally access a cellular phone via Bluetooth wireless technology. More often than not, going unnoticed to the phone’s owner. A vulnerability such as this allows phone calls, and SMS messages to be read and sent, phonebook contacts to be erased, phone conversations to be tapped, and other malicious activities. Fortunately, widespread impact is minimized because of the range of bluethooth technology. Access is only attainable within a 10 meter range of the phone.

Ransomware & Scareware

It makes a computer unusable, then demands payment in order for the user to regain full access. Ransomware is also commonly referred to as a “cryptovirus” or “cryptotrojan.” First it will disable an essential system service or lock the display at system startup and encrypt some of the user’s personal files. Then prompts the user to enter a code obtainable only after wiring payment to the attacker or urging the user to buy a decryption or removal tool. Ransomware was originally with a trojan called PC Cyborg.

It is a software that tricks computer users into downloading or purchasing it, under the guise of fixing their computer. Scareware programs often run a fictitious virus and malware scan, and then present the user with a list of malicious programs or problems that must be corrected. The scareware informs the computer user that in order to fix these “problems” it will require the user to pay a fee for a “full” or “registered” version of the software. Examples of scareware include: System Security, Anti-Virus 2010, and Registry Cleaner XP.

Sidejacking:

Sidejacking is a hacking technique used to gain access to your website specific accounts. Websites typically encrypt your password so it cannot be stolen, but then send you an unencrypted “session-id”. The session-id is either some random data in the URL, or more often, random data in a HTTP cookie. A hacker who finds the session-id can then use it to gain access to the respective account. Thus enabling the hacker ability to read your email, look at what you’ve bought online, or control your social network account, and so on.

This information is then used to create duplicate credit/debit/ATM cards that was used halfway around the world, within 30 minutes. Whatever the method, the goal is the same: to get your personal information and money.

The Federal Trade Commission recently moved against a firm that was allegedly offering phony government loans by text. Five and a half million text messages were sent to cellphones in just 40 days — roughly 85 per minute, according to the commission. This firm also is alleged to have sold the numbers of people who replied asking to be removed from the list.

So here’s your defense:

Don’t reply. Even sending a “remove” or “stop” response to a smishing text tells scammers that your number is active. Schemers are preying on victims that text back and ultimately verify that the text has been sent to an active cell phone number. If the message has a link in it, never click it. Many schemers use this as way to spread a viral attack on your phone.

Block suspicious numbers. Your cellphone provider may be able to block numbers where the texts and calls originate. If you believe you have fallen victim to a “smishing” bank scam, call your bank. They’ll be able to tell you if the text is legitimate.

Your bank is texting you? Look up its number yourself — don’t trust the one provided in the text — and call.

Don’t store credit card and account login information in emails or notes on the phone.

Set your phone to time out and lock after a short period. If it’s stolen, thieves won’t get personal information.

Install updates. When you receive a bona fide notification of an upgrade to your phone’s software, install it immediately. If you doubt the message is legitimate, call your cell or app provider

Do your research – If you believe you have fallen victim to a “smishing”, lottery sweepstakes scam, contact your BBB directly and if it is a scam, file an official complaint against the business that sent the text.

CONTACT THE FEDERAL TRADE COMISSION – The FTC works to legally prevent fraudulent business practices in the marketplace. You may file a complaint with the FTC by calling 1.877.382.HELP (4357).

…A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.

I take you back to the scene which, in my opinion, is most controversial: Taking the red pill opens the soon-to-be Neo’s eyes to the fantasy that he had been living in. Morpheus says to Neo “You have to understand that many people are not ready to be unplugged, and many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it.” (Contrast with taking the blue pill. If Neo would have taken the blue pill, he would have stayed within the Matrix and been blind to reality.)

1999: The Phantom Menace Vs. The Matrix - The Film League

By contrast, The Matrix was a critical and financial darling, and as of this writing, still ranks with an 8.7 out of 10 rating on IMDB. While The Matrix didn’t have The Phantom Menace’s built in audience, it did seem to have fulfilled…

Publish Date: 09/13/2011 20:12

http://www.thefilmleague.com/2011/09/1999-the-phantom-menace-vs-the-matrix/

Many of my followers will not get this analogy right away as The Matrix movies are geared towards the younger generation and that of the Age of Technology. However, the fact remains that there MAY BE some truth to this “take the red pill”! I wanted answers and answers I got!

Shout out to my instructor “RL”!…he, always encourages his students to remember that we took the “Red Pill” when we advanced to his course. Photoshop is AMAZING to say the least. I work with CS5 Extended version and I have to say, some of the things I can do with photographs from digital cameras, commercial cd of digital images, captured video images and artwork created in drawing programs has amazed me. What is Photoshop?…basically, its a graphics editing software: click here for more information. I can take images of two totally different people and merge or infuse them into a whole new person. How’s that for a God-like complex? Seriously though, I have found that my clients are asking me to restore old photos of ancestors that have been well preserved for just such an opportunity! I am happy to provide the service.

As far as THE MATRIX….well, I have my take on that also….

There has always been some kind of “conspiracy theory”…in EVERY generation. I believe what I see. However, when working with Photoshop the way I have, I’m almost certain that what you see MAY NOT always be what is actually REAL. I have stopped believing what I see in magazines, movies and images I see of celebrities….there are just WAY TOO MANY things that could have been done to “enhance” the appearance.

My goal is simple and my motives are pure. I want to help the person who needs information on how to sort through this entire MATRIX-like world and live comfortably while keeping up-to-date with what’s going on in the world.

More importantly, is the fact that today’s age of technology has thrust EVERYONE… into a position of great advancement. Some are willing to make the change while others are quite reluctant. I even find myself drawn to old ways when it comes to acclimating myself in new technologies, such as YouTube, social networking, internet businesses, SEO [search engine optimization]…. (still working on that), and a multitude of other avenues……millions and millions of people have taken their ideas and turned them into lucrative businesses, by way of this new and rapidly advance age. I’m excited about it. I still have much to learn, but the possibilities are endless when you stop to think about it. Like California and its coined phrase (you can sue ANYBODY for ANYTHING), the internet has endless potential…well at least until the government takes over…. (more will be revealed)…..

I welcome comments on this article

I was just thinking about my mother’s best friend the other day. She mentioned that she had to check her Facebook page and download some music to upload to her IPOD!…

This inspired me to write another article about seniors and the internet. I can list at least 20 seniors I know who are more active on the internet than what would have been believed just 10 years ago. I often encounter seniors that are adamant about staying away from computers and the internet but actually, those numbers are dwindling quickly. They are surfing, blogging, active in forums and starting online business!

People over 65 only make up approximately less than 10%of the active Internet world, however, these numbers are on the rise. In the last ten years, the number of senior citizens actively using the Internet has increased by more than 55%, from 11.3 million active users in November 2004 to 17.5 million in November 2009. Among people 65 and over, the growth of women in the last five years has outpaced the growth of men by 6 percentage points….GO GIRL POWER!

Not only are more people 65 and older heading online, but they are also spending more time on the Internet. Time spent on the web by seniors increased 11%in the last five years, from approximately 52 hours per month in November 2004 to just over 58 hours in 2009.

Of the total population, 13% is represented by the 65 and over crowd and with this increase in online usage. Based on what they’re doing online, its understandable that they are engaged in a lot of the same activities that dominate individuals of other ages, such as – e-mail, sharing photos, social networking, checking out the latest news and weather – and it’s worth noting that a good percentage of them are spending time with age-appropriate pursuits such as leisure travel, personal health care and financial concerns.

What are they doing on the Web?
Online visitors 65+ partake in many activities, from e-mail to bill paying. With 88.6 % of seniors, checking personal e-mail was the No. 1 online activity performed in the last 30 days. Viewing or printing online maps and checking the weather online were the second (68.6%) and third (60.1%) most popular online activities, with 68.6 and 60.1 percent, respectively.

The No. 1 online spot for people over 65 in November 2009 was Google Search…10.3 million unique visitors! Yahoo and Facebook were No. 2 and No. 3, with 8.2 million and 7.9 million visitors, respectively. Interestingly, Facebook, which came in at No. 3, ranked No. 45 just a year ago among sites visited by senior citizens

Overall, the number of unique visitors who are 65 or older on social networking and blog sites has increased 53 percent in the last two years alone. 8.2% of all social network and blog visitors are over 65, just 0.1 percentage points less than the number of teenagers who frequent these sites….INTERESTING, I THOUGHT. I found a few references…

WordPress provides us with FREE blog sites, and updates, but the price we pay if you are self-hosted, is unfortunate, to say the least. I have decided to provide a Tekknowgerl solution in hopes that you won’t have to endure the disastrous position I was in. Research on the internet gave way to multiple possible “fixes”, but to no avail. Two of the most common are listed here just as a reference in case you want to troubleshoot by the process of elimination. Whether you be a novice or a technology wizard, I hope this helps you solve your plight!

Finally…

Updating WordPress manually through my FTP client did the job! It’s not complicated, only remember not to over-write your wp-content or wp-config files. Upload them a few at a time being mindful of the two most important files and PRESTO, you have access to your blog as well as your admin page to fix up your mistakes and are able to BACKUP your blog.

cell phone rescue rice wet

Many of us have found ourselves in a situation where we have either accidentally dropped our cell phone, cordless phone, Bluetooth or other electronic device in water! Some cases have even resulted in a complete submersion in water, i.e., a swimming pool, dishwater, bathtub or (heaven forbid) the toilet……

Well Tekknowgerl has had similar issues and I have found a trick that you can try right at home. You only need to have some uncooked rice on hand and about 24 hours to allow the trick to work.
IMMEDIATELY TURN THE DEVICE OFF! DO NOT MANIPULATE THE DEVICE by recharging or switching off and on. Do not try to operate in any way. You don’t want to short circuit your device. Simply remove all parts, i.e., batteries, sim card, etc., and place the device and parts that has the water damage in a bowl or zip-lock bag large enough to cover with the uncooked rice. (I prefer a bag, but whatever works for you). Make sure however, if you use a bag, which you suck out all the air possible, once you have covered the device with the rice, (this avoids moisture in the bag). That’s it! Wait 24 hours (approximately) and VOILA! Your device is dry and ready to be used again. Of course, if you notice drops of water, the device should be covered in rice for more time. This tip came in handy from one of my readers and is verified by Tekknowgerl. However, don’t just take my word for it, the internet has solutions and Tekknowgerl believes in sharing the knowledge.

Every cell phone is tracked by carriers and every smartphone does it also. How else could Apple 2 years ago tell you where your iPhone was when you lost it and show you a map online.. (using their mobileme service) I think too many people took that “It’s Magical!” marketing term a bit too literally.

Android does it also but they don’t store the whole thing on the phone they upload it to their servers when you go to their stores.

Is it really safe on their servers?
Maybe we should ask Sony (PlayStation Network Security Group) they got hacked and lost almost everything (usernames, passwords, security question answers and credit card information, except the credit card pin) putting hundreds of thousands of users at risk. (Many parents put their information in for their kids…)
The credit card pin was safe because Sony didn’t store it.

But you even have to watch the “FREE” applications you use on your phones for example:

Pandora is one of the most friendly social applications on all smart phones:
- They transmit your username, password, sex, age and more to advertisers..(be sure to thank them for that)
With all that said Apple did screw up when they said the iphone did not track your location when you turned the services off,
because it still did the tracking, a bug? maybe.. (at least that’s what Apple claims, and it will be fixed shortly they say.)

But if you can sue Apple for software bugs, Microsoft better watch out..(Rumor: Bill Gates is probably writing a big check to the Apple legal defense fund as you read this.. )

I think this article is an excellent resource for almost anyone who needs or wants to learn about computers. Make sure you exercise patience and tolerance when assisting your pupil. Make the lessons fun and simple. As time goes on, you and your student will enjoy surfing the net, chatting, “Tweeting” and blogging…who knows, maybe your senior will create a blog specifically for SENIORS.
